Returning to long relief

Manager Pat Murphy indicated Tuesday that Alexander will return to operating as a long reliever, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports.

Analysis

The left-hander pitched well in his first start of the season with 5.2 scoreless innings, but he was less effective in the past two outings and surrendered eight runs (four earned) Monday against the Tigers. Jose Quintana recently joined the rotation while Tobias Myers (oblique) is finishing up a rehab assignment, as Milwaukee's rotation is regaining some pieces. Prospect Logan Henderson was called up Tuesday and could take Alexander's spot in the rotation this weekend versus the A's.

Struggles mightily in first loss

Alexander (1-1) took the loss Monday against the Tigers after giving up eight runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out two.

Analysis

Alexander threw just one clean inning Monday, but his throwing error in the fourth inning at least resulted in each of Detroit's four runs scored in the frame to go unearned in the box score. Although the error also prevented his ERA from ballooning to a much higher figure, Alexander still holds a 4.32 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a troublesome 14:10 K:BB over 16.2 innings (three starts) to begin the season. A banged-up Brewers pitching staff should keep the left-hander in the rotation for at least one more turn, and Alexander is tentatively scheduled to take the mound against the Athletics this weekend.

Labors through short outing

Alexander didn't factor in the decision against Colorado on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 3.2 innings.

Analysis

Alexander was handed a 5-0 lead through three frames, but he wasn't able to go deep enough to qualify for the victory. The southpaw didn't allow Colorado to catch up, though he yielded constant traffic on the basepaths -- the Rockies put multiple runners on base in each of the four frames in which Alexander pitched. After impressing with 5.2 scoreless innings his previous trip to the mound, this was a bit of a disappointing step back for Alexander, though it was far from a disastrous outing since Milwaukee ended up winning in a 17-2 rout. There's a good chance Alexander will stick in the rotation, at least in the short term, given the Brewers have already been decimated by injuries to starting pitchers.
