Nearly unhittable in no-decision

Martinez allowed one hit and no walks while striking out seven batters over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Saturday.

Analysis

Martinez allowed just two batters to reach base over his seven innings, yielding a single to Gary Sanchez in the fourth frame and hitting Sanchez with a pitch in the seventh. His brilliance didn't earn him a victory, though, as Brewers starter Tobias Myers went toe-to-toe with Martinez, recording 7.1 scoreless innings of his own. Martinez had been working primarily as a reliever until recently, and over two starts since rejoining the rotation Aug. 5, he's tossed 12 scoreless frames while giving up five hits and posting a 12:0 K:BB. Given that success, it's logical that he'll stick in the rotation, and he's tentatively slated to face the Royals at home next week.

Getting second straight start

Martinez is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

Analysis

Martinez will be making his third straight turn through the rotation, but his second in a row as a traditional starter after he was previously deployed as a bulk reliever behind opener Tony Santillan on July 30 versus the Cubs. Though his numbers as a reliever this season have been much stronger than what he's turned in as a starter, Martinez might have delivered his best outing yet his last time out Monday, when he struck out five batters over five shutout innings to earn a win over the Marlins.

Picks up win in spot start

Martinez (6-5) got the win Monday against the Marlins. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

Analysis

Martinez was sharp in his first start since May 22, needing 70 pitches to get through five frames against the Marlins. Making this outing even more impressive is the fact that Martinez was working on just two days rest. The 34-year-old has now picked up a win in three of his last four outings. Martinez could be looking at a chance at another start despite pitching to a 7.36 ERA across 25.2 innings in his five other starts this season.

Making start Monday

Martinez will start Monday's game against the Marlins in Miami.

Analysis

Martinez will draw his first start since May 22, but he had already been filling the fifth spot in the rotation after he worked four innings in bulk relief behind opener Tony Santillan in the Reds' 6-3 win over the Cubs last Tuesday. He'll be taking the hill on just two days' rest after covering an inning out of the bullpen Friday against the Giants, but Martinez shouldn't be operating under any significant restrictions since he tossed just 17 pitches in that appearance. Over his prior five starts this season, Martinez turned in a 7.36 ERA across 25.2 innings.
