Taking seat against lefty

Lowe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees.

Analysis

Lowe has gotten off to an excellent start to his time with the Red Sox by batting 5-for-14 with a home run, two doubles, two walks, five RBI and three runs through his first four games, but the Red Sox aren't yet ready to expose the left-handed-hitting first baseman to lefty pitching. For the second straight matchup against a lefty starter (Carlos Rodon), Lowe will cede first base to the right-handed-hitting Romy Gonzalez.

Producing for new team

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 12-1 win over the Yankees.

Analysis

Lowe contributed to Boston's seven-run ninth inning with a run-producing single and then scored himself. He's either scored or driven in a run in five straight games since joining the Red Sox. Lowe is 5-for-14 with three walks, two doubles, a home run, five RBI and four runs scored for his new team.

Late-game heroics

Lowe started at designated hitter and went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to Baltimore.

Analysis

Lowe endeared himself to the Fenway Faithful by launching a game-tying, two-run home in the bottom of the ninth inning to set up extra innings. The heroism, however, was short-lived, as the Red Sox subsequently failed to produce a run on bases-loaded situations later in the ninth, and then again in the 10th. It total, the Red Sox were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Lowe's served as a pinch hitter and DH since being added to the roster Monday. Eventually, he's expected to become the primary first baseman against right-handers.

Makes Boston debut

Lowe entered Monday's game as a pinch hitter, walked and scored a run in a 6-3 loss to the Orioles.

Analysis

Lowe pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth inning and was not needed for the field. He was officially added to the roster Monday and wasn't in the starting lineup against a left-hander. Lowe could enter the starting nine Tuesday against Baltimore right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano.

Available, but not starting Monday

Lowe signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox on Monday but won't be included in the lineup for the team's series opener versus the Orioles.

Analysis

The switch-hitting Abraham Toro will draw the start at first base while the Red Sox face off against lefty Trevor Rogers in the series opener, but the left-handed-hitting Lowe is likely to occupy the strong side of a platoon at the position with Toro or the right-handed-hitting Romy Gonzalez. Lowe was in the midst of a disappointing season with Washington before he was released over the weekend, but he had performed at a slightly above league-average level against right-handed pitching, slashing .235/.312/.412 with a 104 wRC+ over 337 plate appearances.
