Takes blown save Thursday

Miller allowed a run on two hits and struck out one over 1.1 innings, taking a blown save in Thursday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Astros.

Analysis

Miller was brought in with two outs in the eighth inning, but he allowed a game-tying, three-run home run to Victor Caratini. Miller stayed in for the ninth and kept the game tied, but he didn't reap the rewards of that effort, as Michael Kelly pitched the 10th and earned the win. Miller has converted 14 of 17 save chances this season, so his status as the Athletics' closer isn't in question despite mediocre ratios. He's at a 5.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 46:14 K:BB over 27.2 innings.

Notches 14th save

Miller collected the save in Sunday's 3-2 win against the Royals, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Analysis

The flamethrowing righty worked around a leadoff infield single by Drew Waters to smoothly lock down the win on 12 pitches. This was a welcome sight for Miller after he conceded three runs in a non-save situation against Kansas City on Friday. Through 25.1 total frames, the Athletics closer has pitched to a 5.33 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB while going 14-for-16 in save opportunities.

Shaky in non-save spot

Miller coughed up three runs on one hit and two walks in the ninth inning of Friday's 6-4 win over the Royals. He struck out one.

Analysis

The A's closer hadn't pitched since Sunday, so manager Mark Kotsay elected to get Miller some work in a 6-1 game. The flamethrowing righty had trouble finding the plate, tossing only 14 of 25 pitches for strikes, but he displayed his usual elite velocity as 16 of those pitches reached triple digits, including a 100.7 mph fastball on his final offering of the night. It was the first time he'd issued multiple walks since May 17, but Miller's been struggling overall since the beginning of last month, stumbling to an 8.78 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 19:12 K:BB in his last 13.1 innings while blowing two of his last six save chances.
