Takes loss in 2026 debut

Gil (0-1) took the loss against the Rays on Friday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two across four innings.

Analysis

Gil was handed an early 2-0 lead, but he quickly lost the lead after yielding a two-run homer to Yandy Diaz. Gil gave up another run in the third and didn't receive enough run support to avoid the loss. He was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day to serve as the Yankees' No. 5 starter after the team initially went with a four-man rotation to open the season. Gil is projected to start next week at home against the Angels.

Recalled ahead of Friday's start

The Yankees recalled Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Analysis

Gil was left out of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation as the club initially operated with a four-man setup, but he's now up to fill in the No. 5 spot and will start Friday's game versus the Rays. The 27-year-old missed much of last season with a lat strain, finishing with a 3.32 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 41:33 K:BB across 57 regular-season innings covering 11 starts. Gil will need to pitch well to keep a rotation spot once Carlos Rodon (elbow/hamstring) and Gerrit Cole (elbow) are ready.
