Dealing with back issue

Rodriguez exited Sunday's contest against Tampa Bay in the third frame due to lower-back tightness, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Analysis

Rodriguez appeared to be dealing with a great level of discomfort after plunking Cedric Mullins with a changeup with one out in the top of the third, and it is now understood to be the result of back tightness. He finished his day having tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two runs, both of which scored after his departure, on three hits and two walks while striking out one. The 26-year-old was making his sixth start of the season, and it's unclear if his next projected outing against the Athletics on Thursday is in danger.

Exits early Sunday

Rodriguez (undisclosed) exited Sunday's start against the Rays in the third inning, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Analysis

Rodriguez hit Cedric Mullins with an 83 mph changeup with one out in the top of the third frame, and he immediately started grimacing. The Angels promptly removed him from the contest, and it's unclear what injury the right-handed pitcher may be dealing with. More information on Rodriguez's status will likely be provided in the near future.

Bounces back with solid start

Rodriguez allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Houston on Monday.

Analysis

Rodriguez was pummeled in his previous start, giving up eight runs (seven earned) over 3.2 innings against Colorado. It was thus promising to see the right-hander respond with a much better performance Monday, racking up a season-high six punchouts while giving up an acceptable two earned runs. Rodriguez took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning, but he appeared to run out of steam in that frame, as he gave up three doubles and two runs before departing with one out. Two very poor outings through five starts have Rodriguez at an ugly 8.10 ERA on the campaign, but he'll try to build some positive momentum in his next appearance, which is lined up to be a home matchup against Tampa Bay.
