Falls two outs shy of first win
Herz did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against Atlanta. He struck out five.
Analysis
Herz received a second start after struggling in his debut against the Mets and showed the requisite improvement in holding Atlanta to two runs. After allowing those two runs and four baserunners in the second, Herz settled down and retired six of seven batters over the next two frames. A seven-run fourth by the Nationals put Herz in line for the win but Herz allowed two batters to reach base in the fifth and was pulled two outs shy of being eligible for his first big-league win. With both Josiah Gray and Trevor Williams remaining on the shelf, Herz looks to be in line for another start, likely to take place next weekend when the Nationals welcome the Marlins to town for a weekend set.

Analysis
The rookie will get a tough draw in his second MLB start, as he'll not only oppose a formidable Atlanta offense in a hitter-friendly environment, but he'll also be matching up head-to-head with one of the National League's top pitchers in Max Fried. After getting called up from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Herz took a loss in his big-league debut against the Mets, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings.

Herz (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals fell 6-3 to the Mets, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over four-plus innings. He struck out three.
Analysis
Making his major-league debut, the 23-year-old southpaw looked good his first time through the order, but New York's hitters quickly figured him out. Herz could get a longer look in the Nats' rotation due to the team's lack of alternatives, but Josiah Gray (elbow) could be back by the middle of the month to bump the rookie back to Triple-A. Assuming he does stick around, Herz would face a tough test in his next outing, which lines up to come at home this weekend against Atlanta.

Called up for major-league debut
The Nationals recalled Herz from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis
Herz is set to make his major-league debut Tuesday against the Mets, filling in for the injured Trevor Williams (elbow). The left-hander has posted a 3.75 ERA and 42:29 K:BB over 36 innings covering nine starts for Rochester this season. Herz boasts a 33.6 percent strikeout rate during his time in the minors but also a 15.3 percent walk rate.
