Goes seven strong in spot start
Criswell did not factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Astros, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings.
Analysis
Criswell allowed just a solo homer in the second inning and otherwise kept the Astros in check, needing only 84 pitches to complete seven strong frames in his first start and seventh major-league appearance of the season. The 29-year-old now owns a 3.57 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings with the Red Sox, though Friday's outing was likely just a spot start with Dustin May in line to take the fifth spot in the team's rotation.

Starting Friday vs. Astros

Analysis
The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and will step into Boston's rotation to fill the spot vacated by Richard Fitts' demotion earlier this week. Criswell, who's worked out of the bullpen in each of his six MLB appearances this year, has a 5.06 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 innings. The 29-year-old righty may be in line for just a spot start, as the newly acquired Dustin May is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale and could stick as the fifth member of the rotation over Criswell moving forward.

Analysis
Criswell will provide some much-needed length in the Boston bullpen after starter Richard Fitts lasted only four innings in Monday's loss to the Twins before being optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old righty has made six relief appearances with the Red Sox in 2025, allowing nine runs (six earned) with a 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 frames. Criswell had been starting at Triple-A could be a candidate to enter the rotation the next time Fitts' turn in the rotation comes up during this weekend's series versus the Astros.
