May not be guaranteed everyday job
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said this weekend that a decision hasn't been made if Volpe (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Volpe remains on assignment in the minors with Double-A Somerset, but his 20-day rehab window will come to a close following the weekend. Through his first 12 games between Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Volpe has slashed .275/.333/.350 with an 8.9 percent walk rate and 20 percent strikeout rate, but it's unclear if that level of production will be enough for the Yankees to reinstall him as their everyday shortstop in place of Jose Caballero (.719 OPS over 120 plate appearances). As Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News notes, Caballero hasn't been practicing at other infield positions in anticipation of Volpe's return, and Volpe has worked exclusively as a shortstop since 2023. Volpe has minor-league options remaining, so the Yankees could elect to activate him from the IL and send him to Triple-A if they don't believe he's an upgrade over Caballero but want to have him continue playing on an everyday basis.

Staying on rehab through weekend
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Volpe (shoulder) will remain on his rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset through this weekend, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis
The Yankees discussed the possibility of bringing Volpe back for their weekend series against the Orioles, but he'll be in line for his season debut early next week instead. Coming back from left shoulder surgery, Volpe has played 10 rehab contests thus far, slashing .303/.324/.394 with one home run, two stolen bases and a 1:7 BB:K. Jose Caballero will remain the Yanks' primary shortstop through the weekend.

Will not be activated Friday
Volpe (shoulder) will not be activated from the 10-day injured list before Friday's game versus the Orioles, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
The Yankees had not ruled out the possibility of reinstating Volpe to make his season debut Friday, but the club has ultimately decided to give the shortstop at least one more rehab game with Double-A Somerset. He's hitting .303/.324/.394 with one home run, two stolen bases and a 1:7 BB:K in his first 10 rehab games. Jose Caballero will continue to handle shortstop for the Yankees until Volpe is deemed ready.

Return date still TBD
The Yankees have yet to decide whether Volpe (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list for their series this weekend against the Orioles, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reported Sunday that Volpe would rejoin the Yankees this week, and while that could still happen, the decision has yet to be made. Volpe is slashing .308/.333/.423 with one home run, two stolen bases and a 1:7 BB:K in his first eight rehab games. He's currently at Double-A Somerset and will continue his rehab with the affiliate until the Yankees choose when to activate him.
