According to McMenamin, the Lakers said the trade fell through because the Hornets failed to satisfy a condition of the deal. Bobby Marks of ESPN.com relays that because the deadline has passed, the trade was not allowed to be amended. Williams returns to the Hornets, but he likely won't be available for Sunday's game in Detroit. Williams will function as Anthony Davis' replacement, as he should immediately step in as the Lakers' new starting center once he's cleared to debut. One of the most promising young big men in the NBA, Williams has one year left on his rookie contract but appears to be in the Lakers' long-term plans. After missing the Hornets' first 20 games of the season due to a left foot tendon strain, Williams returned to action in early December and averaged 16.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 blocks across 25.0 minutes in his 23 appearances for Charlotte before being traded.

Williams supplied 23 points (7-12 FG, 9-10 FT), 14 rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal over 32 minutes during Monday's 124-114 loss to the Wizards.
Analyse
Williams recorded his second straight 20-point double-double Monday and was the Hornets' third-leading scorer behind Miles Bridges and Nick Smith (24 each). Williams has missed three of the Hornets' last six games due to left foot injury management, but he's been effective since making his 2024-25 regular-season debut in early December. He has averaged 19.3 points on 56.8 percent shooting, 12.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks over 30.6 minutes per game since the beginning of January.
