Big numbers in return, out Saturday

Embiid (face) ended Friday's 108-98 victory over Charlotte with 34 points (12-24 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 8-9 FT), nine assists, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 31 minutes. Head coach Nick Nurse said after the game that Embiid won't play Saturday against the Cavaliers due to left knee injury management, according to Austin Krell of USA Today.

Analysis

After suffering a sinus fracture in the 76ers' Dec. 13 loss to the Pacers, Embiid wasn't expected to be re-evaluated for a week, but he missed just one game before practicing Thursday and being cleared to play Friday. He donned a protective mask in his return to the lineup but didn't display any signs of being limited, as he rolled to an efficient scoring night while establishing new season highs in assist and steals. The 76ers are likely to continue holding Embiid out of one half of back-to-back sets to manage his left knee throughout the season, so the star center's expected absence for Saturday comes as little surprise. Andre Drummond and Guerschon Yabusele are likely to cover most of the minutes at center Saturday, though the 76ers could also make room in the rotation for Adem Bona as the backup center if Yabusele is needed to play some power forward. Look for Embiid to return to action Monday against the Spurs.

Playing Friday against Charlotte

Embiid (sinus fracture) is available to play Friday against the Hornets, Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Analysis

Embiid was expected to be sidelined over the weekend due to a sinus fracture he suffered against the Pacers on Dec. 13. He missed this past Monday's game against the Hornets, but he will take the floor for Friday's rematch. Embiid has appeared in just six regular-season games and is averaging 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.0 blocks over 29.3 minutes per game.

19 December 2024

Deemed questionable for Friday

Embiid (sinus fracture) is listed as questionable for Friday's game versus the Hornets.

Analysis

Embiid was initially expected to remain out through the weekend due to a right sinus fracture but could suit up Friday. Considering Philadelphia has back-to-back games Friday and Saturday, the superstar center will likely only be able to suit up for one of them, if at all.

19 December 2024

Practices Thursday

Embiid (sinus fracture) participated in Thursday's 5-on-5 practice and wore a face mask, Noah Levick of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Analysis

Embiid was set to be re-evaluated in one week from this past Monday due to a sinus fracture. While this likely means that the superstar big man will remain out for Friday's and Saturday's contests, it appears he is nearing a return to action. Until Embiid is able to suit up, Andre Drummond and Guerschon Yabusele should continue to receive increased playing time.

16 December 2024

Re-evaluated in one week

The 76ers announced Monday that Embiid (sinus fracture) will be re-evaluated in one week, Ky Carlin of USA Today reports.

Analysis

Given this timetable, Embiid will miss at least the next three games for the 76ers. If he's re-evaluated prior to their game on Dec. 23, a return against the Spurs could potentially be on the table. With Embiid sidelined for at least a few games, the 76ers will need to rely heavily on Andre Drummond and Guerschon Yabusele in the frontcourt. Meanwhile, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey are likely to soak up more usage.

15 December 2024

Officially out Monday

Embiid has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Hornets due to a right sinus fracture.

Analysis

Embiid was diagnosed with a sinus fracture after leaving Friday's loss to the Pacers, but at first, the 76ers didn't want to rule the big man out for Monday's contest. Given his injury history, it's certainly possible Embiid will miss additional contests, but for now, he's being treated as day-to-day. His next chance to suit up will come Friday during a rematch against the Hornets, while Andre Drummond and Guerschon Yabusele are candidates for increased roles in Embiid's absence.
